Designed as a contemporary holiday retreat, Taumata was created around the rituals of New Zealand beachfront living. Situated within a busy suburban environment, the home was carefully designed to celebrate its coastal setting while maintaining a sense of privacy and retreat. The architectural vision centred on creating a calm, self-contained sanctuary that maximised connections to the beach, reserve and surrounding natural environment.
CHALLENGE
The site required a design that could respond to the changing coastal conditions of wind, sun and sea while also providing privacy from the surrounding suburban context. The material palette needed to be restrained and timeless, balancing durability with a strong architectural identity suited to the beachfront location. With cedar selected as the sole exterior cladding material, the finish played an important role in the overall performance and appearance of the building. It needed to preserve the natural character and texture of the timber, maintain the project's muted coastal palette and provide a considered level of protection for an exposed seaside environment without obscuring the material's inherent qualities. Selecting an appropriate timber treatment was therefore a key consideration, ensuring the cedar could retain its intended appearance while performing in a demanding coastal setting.
SOLUTION
The design team embraced cedar as the sole exterior cladding material, drawing inspiration from the client's initial preference for a Cape Cod-style home while evolving the concept into a contemporary coastal residence. Finished in Dryden WoodOil Slate, the cedar establishes a restrained, natural aesthetic that complements the home's sculptural form while allowing the timber grain and natural variation to remain visible.
Given the building's exposed coastal setting and reliance on timber as its primary exterior material, the selected finish needed to work with the cedar rather than conceal it. Dryden WoodOil Slate was chosen for its ability to enhance the natural character of cedar while providing protection suited to New Zealand's coastal conditions. Its penetrating, water-repellent formulation helps protect the timber without forming a surface film, maintaining the natural appearance and texture of the cladding. This approach aligned with the architectural intent of creating a material palette that felt authentic and enduring while supporting the long-term performance of the timber. The Slate tone also contributed to the home's restrained material palette, providing a subtle, weathered appearance that complements the surrounding coastal landscape. The consistent application of cedar across the exterior, combined with varied detailing techniques, creates different levels of texture, opacity and transparency, while carefully framed openings draw attention to the beach and adjoining reserve and reinforce the home's sense of privacy.
OUTCOMES
Taumata successfully balances privacy, durability and connection to place. The sculptural form responds to the coastal environment by celebrating natural light, views and outdoor living while providing shelter from the wind and sea. The cedar cladding, finished in Dryden WoodOil Slate, contributes to the home's understated architectural character while supporting the long-term performance of the timber in a demanding beachfront environment. By combining a natural timber aesthetic with protection appropriate for an exposed coastal location, Dryden WoodOil helped ensure the architectural vision could be maintained without compromising the character of the cedar. By retaining the natural grain and warmth of the timber rather than masking it, the finish helps preserve the design intent over time and provides confidence that timber can be specified in exposed coastal locations without compromising aesthetic outcomes. The result is a timeless holiday home that captures the essence of contemporary New Zealand coastal living.
