Nestled atop the sand dunes on the fringes of a prestigious golf course, Casa del Nord is a bespoke residential retreat set within a breathtaking coastal landscape. The home is composed of three distinct pods clad in natural cedar shiplap, carefully designed to harmonise with the surrounding environment. Gently pitched metal roofs introduce a contemporary architectural expression, while copper-clad elements discreetly house bathrooms and other private amenities.
Expansive glazing frames panoramic views across rolling sand dunes and the ocean beyond, creating a strong connection between the interior spaces and the landscape. The result is a contemporary coastal home that balances architectural sophistication with a deep sense of place.
Challenge
Located in close proximity to the coast, the home is exposed to the conditions associated with a seaside environment, including salt-laden air, changing weather patterns, and high UV exposure. As cedar was selected as the primary exterior cladding material, protecting the timber while maintaining its natural appearance was a key consideration.
The architects sought a finish that would help maintain the performance and appearance of the cedar while achieving a naturally weathered aesthetic that complemented the coastal landscape. The specification needed to ensure the timber would develop character over time while continuing to suit the demands of a challenging coastal environment.
Solution
Dryden WoodOil Platinum was selected for its proven ability to protect timber cladding while achieving the desired silvered, weathered appearance from the outset. The architects were drawn to the finish's ability to enhance the natural character of the timber while providing a coating system well suited to exposed coastal conditions, having previously seen its performance on another coastal cedar-clad home.
The Platinum finish was chosen specifically for its ability to accentuate the natural grain of the timber while creating a balance between a fresh natural appearance and the patina that develops with age. Applied to the cedar shiplap cladding, Dryden WoodOil Platinum enhanced the timber's character while supporting the architectural vision of a home that sits comfortably within its coastal surroundings rather than competing with them.
Outcomes
Dryden WoodOil Platinum has successfully delivered both the aesthetic and performance outcomes envisioned for the project. The finish continues to protect the cedar cladding while allowing it to develop a natural patina that complements the surrounding dunes and coastal landscape.
Studio2 Architects commented “We love how the ‘platinum’ finish accentuates the natural grains of timber, especially on band/rough sawn boards. It’s a good mix of ‘natural’ and ‘patina’ from the first application.
The specification has achieved a successful balance between timber protection and architectural expression, helping Casa del Nord maintain its distinctive coastal character while allowing the cedar to age naturally within its environment.
